Ekrem Akurgal, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Ankara (1941-1981), studied from 1932 to 1940 in Germany, where he received his Ph. D. During the last fourty years, he has conducted excavations at Smyrna, Sinope, Phokaia. Daskyleion, Pitane and Erythrai. Since 1967 he has again been excavating at Ancient İzmir. Professor Akurgal was a member of the Turkish Historical Society (1943-1983) and of The Turkish High Commission for Ancient Monuments (1941-1981). The author was elected as honorary member of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies (1954), of the American Institute of Archaeology (1962) and as Ehrenmitglied of the German Archaeological
Institutet in Berlin (1978). He is a foreign member of the British. Austrian, Swedish, Danish Academies as well as of the "Academies des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres" (Institut de France), of the Academia dei Lincei (Italy) and the Rheinish Westfaelishe Academie (Germany). Akurgal received honorary doctorates (Dr.h.c.) from the University of Bordeaux (1961), University of Athens (1989) and the University of Lecce (1990). He was visiting Professor at the University of Princeton in 1961-1962, at the University of Berlin in 1971-1972, at the Scuola Normale Superiore at Pisa in 1976 and at the University of Vienna in 1980-1981. He has lectured since 1951 in several Universities on the Continent, in the USA, in Great Britain and in the USSR. Holder of the Goethe Medal (1979), he was awarded the "Gyrand Prize" of the Turkish Ministry of Culture (1981).
